Brunel University London will be connecting with former students, supporters and influential contacts in mainland China and Hong Kong over a series of events taking place in early October 2014. Brunel is known internationally for its engineering, design and environmental science courses, as well as having been awarded the Times Higher Education’s Business School of the Year award in 2013.
The Vice Chancellor and President of Brunel University London, Professor Julia Buckingham, along with members of her Executive team will be visiting China in order to build upon the deep links which Brunel already enjoys with Chinese business, institutions and students.
The University will be hosting gatherings of its alumni in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong during this time and hopes to reconnect with many former students in each location. The University will be hosting an event in Hong Kong on 6 October 2014, followed by Beijing on 9 October and Shanghai along with industrial partners on 12 October.
Alongside these events, the Brunel team will be meeting with China Academy of Science and respected Chinese higher education institutions, including Zhejiang University, Sichuan University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to discuss
forging links and deepening cooperation between leading scientists and researchers in the
UK and China.

About the Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Julia Buckingham:
Julia Buckingham, DSc, FCGI, FSB, read Zoology at the University of Sheffield and, after a short spell
in the pharmaceutical industry, moved to London to study for a PhD in Pharmacology and to pursue
an academic career. She was appointed to the Chair of Pharmacology at Charing Cross and
Westminster Medical School in 1987 and Pre-clinical Dean in 1992. She joined Imperial College
London in 1997, contributing to the establishment of the new Faculty of Medicine and held the roles of
College Dean for non-clinical Medicine, Head of the Department of Neuroscience and Mental Health,
Head of the Centre for Integrative Mammalian Physiology and Pharmacology and Pro-Rector
(Education and Academic Affairs). In 2012 she was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Brunel University.
Throughout her career Julia has combined research and education with supporting the broader
aspects of academic life through work with the research councils, medical charities and learned
societies. She has published widely in her field, served on numerous national and international
review panels and received a number of prestigious awards for her work. Former roles include
President of the British Pharmacological Society, President of the Society for Endocrinology, member
of the Sykes Commission, Editor of the Journal of Neuroendocrinology and Chairman of BioScientifca
Ltd. She is currently a Trustee of the Royal Institution, Chairman of SCORE, a governor of St Mary’s
School, Calne and a founder Trustee of the Society of Biology.
