Field, Pitch and Court
Where do we play sports? Usually on a very flat surface. One that islevel, hence the term “a level-playing field”. In Chinese, we use certain wordsto describe this place where we play sports. In English, it is just the same. The word for the playing surface changes depending on the sport.
For indoor sports, usually played on a hard wooden surface, we use theword court. Basketball, volleyball, badminton are all played on courts. Tennis, although outdoor, is also played on a court.
For outdoor sports, we use field or pitch. The term depends on the cultureof the sport. American sports like American football and baseball are played ona field. British and Commonwealth sports like European football (soccer) andrugby are played on a pitch.
“Do you want to go down to the football pitch, see if there’s a pickupgame?”
“I don’t feel like football. How about If we go to the basketball courtstonight?”

Game V Sport
What is the difference between a sport and a game? Theonly real difference is that a sport necessarily has to involveathleticism. Other than that, they are basically the same-- the same bydefinition that is. However, that slight difference can lead us toquestion some sports as to whether they merit being called a “sport”. Take for example F1 racing. Is a driver, who must remain acutely focusedwhile having his body rushed with adrenaline engaging in an athletic act? Is that long-sustained adrenaline-laden focus any different than the pokerplayer risking his life savings on a full house? Or what about theinternational hot dog eating champion whose “bodily skills” involve theunrivaled rapid consumption of pork? Don’t ask your English teacher to distinguishbetween a sport or a game; Understand that ambiguities exist in any language.

Officials, Umpires, Referees
All sports need someone to make sure the rules are followed. In differentgames, this person is called by different names.
In baseball and cricket, the man in charge is the umpire or ‘ump’, forshort. This word is French meaning ‘not equal’. In most other sports, the mainman in charge of keeping order is the referee or ‘ref’. Official is a generalterm for a rule keeper.
Some other similar words for officials include judge, arbiter, arbitrator, linesman, commissaire, timekeeper and touch judge.

裁判员的不同叫法:official(运动统称),umpire(垒球,曲棍球),referee(足球,篮球)
Official(裁判)这个词是对负责保持规则的人的总称。
