Mulan: No, thank you. But there is one thing…

Emperor: What’s that?

Mulan: I want to go back to my family. My father is an old man now and he needs my help.

The Wizard of Oz 《

Characters:

Dorothy: a girl from Kansas and wants to go home

Scarecrow: made of straws and wants some brains

Tin Man: made of tin and wants a heart

Lion: a coward who wants to be brave

Toto: Dorothy’s dog

Act One

[Dorothy is walking on the road with her dog Toto.

Dorothy [talking to her dog]: Oh dear! What can we do?! A cyclone has blown us here in a strange country. Now I have only you and we should keep each other company. The Witch of the North told me to go to see the great Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. He might be able to help us get home. So that’s where we are going.

[While Dorothy is walking and talking, she suddenly sees a scarecrow in the field beside the road.]

Scarecrow: Good day!

Dorothy: Oh! You can speak!

Scarecrow: Of course I can speak. But I can’t move up here on the pole… I’d like to get down. Can you help me to get down?

[Dorothy carefully takes the scarecrow off the pole.

Scarecrow: Thank you very much! Who are you and where are you going?

Dorothy: I’m Dorothy and I’m going to the Emerald city to find the Wizard of Oz. He can help me get home.

Scarecrow: Where is the Emerald City? And who is the Wizard of Oz? I don’t know anything, you see, because I have no brains in my head—only straw.

Dorothy: Oh dear! I’m very sorry!

Scarecrow: I would very much like to have some brains. Can I go to the Emerald City with you? Maybe the Wizard of Oz can help me too.

Dorothy: I don’t know. But yes, please come with me. Maybe he can help you.

Scarecrow: But why do you want to leave Oz, this beautiful country? I don’t understand.

Dorothy: That’s because you have no brains. Kansas is my home. We say, “East, west—home’s best”, and it’s true. I want to go home.

Act Two

[Suddenly they hear a shout from the trees. They all run to see what’s happening. They see a a man by a big tree, with an axe in his hand.

Tin Man [shouting]: Help! Help!

Dorothy: what can I do for you?

Tin Man: I can’t move. Please oil me. There’s an oil-can in my house.

[Dorothy found the oil-can and carefully oiled the Tin Man with the help of the Scarecrow. The Tin Man began to move, his hands and legs.

Tin Man: Thank you! I feel better now. You see, I went out in the rain and water is very bad for a tin body. I was there for a long time, and nobody came to help me.

Dorothy: Lucky for you. We just pass by.

Time Man: Where are you going?

Dorothy: I want to go back to Kansas, my home. The Wizard of Oz might help me.

Scarecrow: I want some brains. The Wizard of Oz might help me too! So we are going to the Emerald City.

Tin Man: Interesting! Can the Wizard give me a heart, do you think? I have no heart, so I can’t love, or feel… I would very much like to have a heart!

Scarecrow: Come with us!

Dorothy: Yes! Then you can ask the Wizard for help, too.

[They start walking together.]

Tin Man: There’s a long way. And we must be very careful, because…

[A big lion suddenly runs out from the trees. It shouts at them, showing them its scary teeth. But Dorothy ran up to the lion and hit it on the nose.

Dorothy: Don’t hurt us! You are bigger and stronger than all of us.

Lion: I didn’t hurt you. Don’t hit me again—please!

Dorothy: Why—you’re afraid! Be quiet, Toto, he isn’t going to hurt us. He’s more afraid than you are. He’s just a big coward.

Lion: It’s true. I am a coward. Everyone thinks lions are brave. I make a lot of noise, but I’m not brave. I’m just a coward.

[The Lion begins to cry.

Dorothy: Come with us to the Emerald City. Maybe the Wizard of Oz can make you brave!

Lion: Oh, thank you! I would very much like to be brave.

Dorothy: Have you ever heard of the Wizard of Oz?

Scarecrow: Is the Wizard a man?

Tin Man: Have you heard of any tales of what he can do?

Lion: Nobody knows. He is a wizard, so he can be a man, or any animal—or anything! Let’s go and see.

Act Three

Narrator: After a long day, walking past fields and through trees, they arrives at the Emerald City. They goes to a big green house and meet the Wizard of Oz one by one. First Dorothy, then the Scarecrow, and then the Tin Man, and last the lion. After they come out, they talk about what happened in the house.

Dorothy: Oh, how terrible! I saw a very, very big head on a green chair! There was no body, or arms, or legs—only a head. I said to the head, “I want to go home to Kansas. Please help me.” The big head asked me to kill the bad Witch of the West first. Only then he could help me get home. But how can I kill the Witch?

Scarecrow: That’s interesting. I didn’t see a Head; I saw a beautiful woman. I asked her for some brains and she said, “Yes, but first you must help Dorothy to kill the Witch of the West.”

Tin Man: I saw a big animal with two heads. I asked for a heart. The animal said, “I can give you a heart; but first you must help Dorothy to kill the Witch of the West.” What did you see, Lion?

Lion: I saw a ball of fire. I said, “I’m a coward; please make me brave.” And the fire said, “When the Witch of the West is dead, I can help you. But not before.” I was angry then, but the ball of fire got bigger and bigger, so I ran away.

Dorothy: Oh, what are we going to do now?

Scarecrow: Well, we must find the Witch of the West and then we must kill her.

Tin Man: Yes!

Lion: Yes!

All: We will have a new adventure!
